It’s a country song.  I can’t think of the artist right now – Neil something.  I know my mom said he was handsome and I didn’t think so at the time, but I wonder if my perspective would be any different twenty odd years later.

Anyways.  I just wanted to put some more work up and muse for a moment on the fickle nature of the beast that is social media.

This first image I posted early last week.  It’s a deliberately creepy house I was working on while my mom was in hospital.  I chose it because I was telling myself it was okay to make mistakes, and that if I didn’t love the final piece, that would be okay.  I really didn’t love the final piece and it really was okay.  So imagine my surprise when I threw it up on Instagram and the invisible crowd that is abundant only in ‘likes’ went wild.  I had over 200 people like that sketch.  And gained something like thirty new followers over the next few days.  I am not complaining mind you.

Here is piece number two.  I’m getting back into my #DBSLdrawsYYC works and trying to post those once a week.  I was careful with this piece.  I used a ruler to try to straighten out perspective, tried to move a little looser with the wash.  Used all the same hashtags (listen to me!) when promoting this one and then some, thinking that with all the added hits to my lovely city, the invisible crowd would once again go wild.

    Crickets.

Social media you fickle, fickle thing.  I had to give myself a quick talking to again reminding myself why I do this stuff.  It’s not for likes.  It’s not even to sell, although I won’t deny the rush you get from positive affirmation in the form of anonymous hearts or thumbs up.

This is for me. This is for me this is for me this is for me.  Any beginners out there, I hope you are listening.
